The construction and operation of this pipeline was awarded to the firm Transgas de Occidente S.A. through the BOMT system, contract which was ceded to Ecogás since January 15, 1998 and to TGI in March of 2007. Before the construction of the pipeline, Ecopetrol conducted an environmental impact study, which was to undertake a detailed analyzes of the environment surrounding the project, determining the crops, wildlife, water sources and the social and economic aspects of the populations which the pipeline would pass by. This study allowed the development of the Environmental Management Plan, approved by the Ministry of Environment to develop the project.

Its construction began on January 19, 1996 , and it was finished in August 24, 1997 . The trunk line consists of 340 km of 20-inch pipe and its branches have a total length of 424 km in pipes ranging from 2 to 8 inches of diameter. The operational phase, which began on August 25, 1997 , will be for twenty (20) years, and then it is to be transfered to TGI in August 2017. It's estimated to meet the needs of more than 2,556,000 Colombians in the west of the country. It now has capacity to meet the supply of 48 municipalities in the departments of Valle del Cauca, Quindio, Caldas, Risaralda, Tolima and thermal power plants of Termovalle and Termoemcali. |
