Flora and fauna - our protected wealth

In 2020, we made progress in the design of strategies to be undertaken as of 2021.

Why is this important?

(103-1)

Colombia is the second richest country in flora and fauna in the world, a wealth that is within the scope of the Sustainable Development Management of our company, which is where we design and deploy strategies that contribute to the conservation of its biodiversity.

This management is based on the understanding of our environment and the interest in adapting our company in the territories where we operate, in order to generate benefits for all.

This is part of our Sustainability Policy and is part of the statement in which we commit to “incorporate good practices and promote actions aimed at protecting the environment, preventing pollution and adapting to and mitigating climate change in our operations”.

How do we manage it?

(103-2) In 2020, due to the health emergency caused by Covid-19, we were unable to carry out field work in the consolidation of secondary information to establish the flora and fauna baseline - a challenge that we had set ourselves in 2019.

However, we virtually carried out environmental workshops with the participation of the authorities and communities in the area of influence of our operation, where we raised environmental awareness on issues such as strategic and sensitive ecosystems, protection and conservation, fauna species, fauna and their function for balance, and prohibited, endemic, threatened and endangered flora species.

(304-4) Furthermore, we care about the wealth of flora and fauna, and we seek to recognize especially those species that are found in areas affected by our operations and infrastructure, and which are part of the Red List of Threatened Species prepared by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and national conservation lists. In the Annexes we present the identified species. (See Annexes)

(304-1) And, although in 2020 it was not possible to enter into the contract to establish the umbrella species on which we would carry out field work to measure the exposure of biodiversity from TGI's operations, this will be carried out from the first semester from 2021.

(103-3) Our actions to protect biodiversity are guaranteed through the monitoring and control of environmental authorities and through compliance with the requirements issued in administrative acts.

Therefore, the registry of operations within or next to protected areas or zones of great value for biodiversity, included in the 2019 Sustainability Report, did not undergo modifications. (See Annexes).

(304-2) In line with the above, within the registry of operations in protected areas, we recognize the impact that the maintenance of the right of way of the Centro Oriente gas pipeline, located in the Serranía de Las Quinchas Natural Park, may represent in terms of transformation of the habitat of the three affected hectares. Although the duration of the impact corresponds to the useful life of the project, its extension and specific coverage, as well as its low intensity, reflect its reversible nature.

(304-3) The sanitary emergency also made it impossible for us to execute the contract with which we would carry out environmental compensation as a result of our company's obligations with the national and regional authorities inventoried since 2019, which include those related to reserve subtraction in the PNN Serranía de Las Quinchas. We have consolidated the contract and these actions for its execution as of 2021.

What we achieved in 2020

(103-3)

283 people, among representatives of the communities and authorities of the areas of influence of TGI's operation, attended the virtual environmental workshops during the health emergency. Hence, we reached communities and set precedents on environmental issues.

  • We strengthened our relationship with Corpoboyacá - entity that has imposed the highest number of environmental compensations, where we seek, apart from the main tree planting activities, to reward the strategic ecosystems of the area of influence.

  • We established an alliance with Proaves, an NGO present in a conservation area in the Mid-Magdalena (Los Yariguíes mountains, part of the Andes mountain range), with the presence of bird species of great interest that must be preserved.

Challenges for 2021

By 2021, we have the commitment to undertake the mandatory environmental compensations with the actors present in the territories.

  • Update the flora and fauna baseline to measure the exposure of biodiversity and strategic ecosystems that intersect with the infrastructure of our company.

  • Promote compensation activities in compliance with environmental obligations, due to environmental licensing processes, lifting of prohibitions or minor permits, in order to compensate the natural environment for the interventions of our projects.

  • Identify actions for the conservation of species of the Red List of Threatened Species prepared by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and in national lists, and whose habitats are in intervention areas due to the operation of our projects.

  • In the medium and long term, consolidate and execute projects for the protection and conservation of the umbrella species determined based on the baseline analysis of flora and fauna, in alliance with various NGOs and neighboring communities.

  • Begin the execution of the mandatory environmental compensation contract by implementing actions focused on the protection and recovery of strategic ecosystems, through the purchase of lands and protective reforestations that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, in alliance with environmental, municipal and territorial authorities.
